Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced early elections, with Canadians set to cast their votes on April 28.
Carney stated that his government seeks a "strong and positive mandate" to address key economic challenges. One of his primary concerns is the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, which he described as "one of the most significant threats to our lives."
Speaking on the urgency of the elections, Carney emphasized the need for a clear mandate to counter Trump’s aggressive economic policies and build a fair economy that benefits all citizens.
He also acknowledged the economic struggles of younger generations, pointing out that while his generation was fortunate, today’s youth must work significantly harder to afford rent and other essential expenses for their families.
Carney’s call for early elections marks the beginning of an intense election campaign, where he faces stiff competition from Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre.
Carney criticized Poilievre’s policies, arguing that his political ideology aligns too closely with that of Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Poilievre, launching his campaign ahead of Carney’s announcement, focused on tax cuts, utilizing Canada’s natural resources, and bringing jobs back to the country.
